THE LAWMAN TAKES A LADY

THE DUVALL BROTHERS

BOOK 2 OF 2

If asked, Connor Duvall would say he was sure of only one thing—he never wanted the heartbreak of loving and losing again. But he hadn’t anticipated the way his fellow deputy would be able to sneak past his walls and get to his lonely heart. When an old threat resurfaced, it evoked his every masculine instinct—to protect, defend…and possess.

Even though Deputy Leigh Ann Hardin is hiding from a painful past, she had created a nice life in Utopia, Wyoming. Still, she found herself wanting more—and her fellow deputy, Connor Duvall, was it. Unfortunately, Connor was still mourning a devastating loss. When her past finally caught up with her, she was surprised to find him ready and willing to protect her. Could he learn to love her too?

EXCERPT

Connor expelled a long breath, one he hadn’t been aware of holding. After five years, why had he suddenly taken notice of just how well-endowed his fellow officer was? And what did it say about his detective skills that it had taken him so long to notice?

When she bent over to straighten the stack of files that threatened to teeter over, he knew he should look away from the view of the enticing curves of her nicely rounded breasts noticeable down the open neck of her shirt. He rubbed a hand down his face, wishing he could slap some sense into himself. He wanted Leigh Ann. After years of drought, his body had awoken with a thirst only she could quench.

Like she’d be interested, he snorted silently. Just because he was feeling like a rowdy horn dog didn’t mean she was feeling anything remotely similar. Although he’d accused her of looking at him with…what had he called it? Hungry eyes? Damn, had he really said that? He was pretty sure he didn’t even register on her radar. At least not in any way other than being a thorn in her side.

Not that he’d kept track of her love life. He frowned, thinking back on the last five years they’d worked together. He hadn’t once, in all that time, seen her talk to a man other than in generalities, much less go out with one. That thought made him happy and sad all at the same time. Which meant it to put a little distance between them.
